This week marks the start of the work we are doing for the WW1 commemorations.
Our display will focus on one man – L/Corporal Edward Eric Cakebread, known as ‘Rick’.
Born in England he arrived in New Zealand in 1912 and enlisted with the Wellington Infantry Battalion in 1915. He was wounded at Gallipoli and contracted Typhoid while recuperating in hospital. Discharged as medically unfit he returned home to New Zealand.
He was a keen photographer and took many snaps of extended family trips to the Kapiti Coast. These include a series of photos of the house they built in Tutere St, Waikanae Beach. He was a keen sportsman, a founding member of the Waikanae Beach Bowling Club, and he volunteered at the local RSA and the Waikanae Fire Brigade.
The display will evolve over the next few months, and some of Rick’s military items will be on display. All of the photos held here at the museum will be catalogued and made available on our website.
